DVD MoviesFun to watch and listen to |
Well, this isn't going to be a very exciting page I'm afraid, merely a list of some of the movies which I happen to own on DVD (which is a wonderful thing that I'm very glad I finally got around to participating in. I actually switched to DVD for the sound, rather than for the picture, because I'm odd like that.)
I've bought most of my 100 or so DVDs from 800.com, who've always been fast, a good price, and have a pretty good selection. However there's now a Best Buy within walking distance of my apartment so I've been picking up stuff on sale there lately.
Not only is the movie really good, but the DVD has 3 commentaries, plus some cool making-of shorts. It's really worth listening to all of the commentaries too, in addition to watching the movie w/ the normal sound.. I watched it all 4 times in about as many days and didn't get bored.
Very good movie, and set largely here in San Francisco which is cool.. The atmospheric sound effects are incredible too, a must-hear on a decent setup.
I personally rather like this film. It's a good action movie, with some good funny moments, and not the MOST terrible plot on the planet. Yes, it's got its predictable moments, and its cliched occurences, but what films don't? Oh, and it's set at Alcatraz, here in the SF bay area, can't go far wrong 8-)
A classic, you can even forgive the fact it's got a MONO soundtrack.
They've added back so many scenes to this it's almost like watching a different movie, really awesome.
I've seen this twice now, and I do still consider it to be the worst of the Alien set, but it wasn't QUITE so bad the second time, and that could be because I was watching on DVD, and partially 'cos it's nice to see a ton of English actors I recognized, who knows.
Wow, after Alien 3 I was convinced this would suck horribly, but it doesn't, in fact it's rather good.
Always a classic, and with a nicely remastered score for us dolby digital folk.
A truly wonderful set, comes with the Full-Length Directors cut (147 minutes!) one one disk, the studio cut with a happy ending on another, and then a third disk full of interviews, making-of's, and other commentaries. Very cool.
A comedy of errors, set amidst the seedy gang-world of London, England. Executed with style and appeal, one of the few movies I've recently been able to sit through without getting up even once to do anything. Of course, I'm not sure if part of the reason I enjoyed it was that it put me in touch with my homeland or something, but I suspect not 8-)
The reason I first saw this film was because the trailer on TV intrigued me, and then I saw it on Laserdisc in a rental store and decided to get it.. Some people seem to hate it because the plot's very dark, but I think it's a decent story and well put together.
For the totally curious, my current setup is as follows:
Soon to be a Denon DVD 2800 progressive scan player, currently I have
a JVC progressive scan until the Denon comes out next week!
Philips 34 inch widescreen HDTV-ready set, which is hooked up to the DVD player
via component video connection, and which is being fed a progressive signal.
The picture quality is INCREDIBLE.. Very tasty indeed.
A
Denon AVR-5700, which has been doing an excellent job for
a while now, and still just about has enough inputs for all of the audio
sources I've managed to come up with. The DVD player's audio connection
is via a Coaxial Digital cable.
